Bachelor of Science in Secondary Biology Education (Florida State-Approved for Certification)

ABOUT THE MAJOR

The Bachelor of Science in Secondary Biology Education is a state-approved initial certification program offered by the Nova Southeastern University (NSU) Fischler School of Education. The program provides a comprehensive set of pedagogical courses specifically designed for biology instruction, combined with a variety of science education courses based on the content of the Florida Sunshine State Science Standards, and the current State-wide assessment in the sciences in (grades 6 – 12). Biology certification is a specialty certification area that allows teachers to provide biology instruction at the middle school level as well as many biological and environmental courses at the high school level. This state-approved program is ideal for students who wish to fulfill their Florida biology teacher certification requirements.

WHO SHOULD APPLY
  • Individuals with high school degrees or General Equivalency Diplomas (GED) who wish to enter the teaching profession as an elementary biology education teacher
  • Individuals enrolled at another college or university who wish to transfer to NSU’s Fischler School of Education's Bachelor of Science in Secondary Biology Education program
  • Practicing paraprofessionals who wish to obtain a bachelor’s degree in secondary biology education and increase their level of expertise in their field
  • Those who wish to obtain their Florida teaching certification in the area of secondary biology education

FOR INCOMING FRESHMEN
  • Completed admission application packet, including $50 nonrefundable application fee made payable to Nova Southeastern University
  • Official high school transcripts with courses, grades, and graduation date (if available) or GED equivalent
  • Official Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or ACT scores are also required for admission into the Professional and Liberal Studies program on NSU’s Main Campus
FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS
  • Completed admission application packet, including $50 non-refundable application fee made payable to Nova Southeastern University
  • Official transcripts from all previously attended colleges and universities
  • Official high school transcripts with courses, grades, and graduation date (if available) or GED equivalent are required for applicants with fewer than 24 college credits
FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
  • Completed admission application packet, including $50 nonrefundable application fee made payable to Nova Southeastern University
  • Course-by-course transcript evaluation with GPA calculation and official English translation, if necessary, from Josef Silny & Associates, World Education Services, or other National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) member
  • For non-native English speakers, official test scores showing a minimum score of 213 on the computer-based or 550 on the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam, 480 on the verbal section of the SAT, a grade of “C” or better in a composition course at regionally accredited college or university in the U.S., or 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam
  • Student (F-1) visa or exchange visitor (J-1) visa
  • Original bank statement or official letter from a financial institution indicating ability to meet all costs of education without financial aid from Nova Southeastern University

Students are required to complete 30 credit hours as part of the General Education Program. For specific course requirements, refer to the General Education Program section in the Academic Resources and Procedures segment of the catalog.

Teacher candidates in the state-approved teacher education program in the secondary biology education major (grades 6–12) must also keep track of program benchmarks within the courses. There are five benchmarks, coinciding with five blocks in the state-approved programs. At these five benchmarks, teacher candidates provide documentation showing completion of program requirements. A supervised field experience occurs in SECE 3550.

CONVENIENT DELIVERY OPTIONS

Coursework for a bachelor’s degree in secondary biology education is available for traditional students and working professionals at NSU’s Main Campus in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In addition, the classes in the biology program are also available online. These flexible options allow students in and outside of South Florida to receive and submit coursework and interact with participants and professors via the Internet. Similarly, they also allow working professionals to complete their degrees without having to leave their jobs or travel long distances. International students can also benefit from the Fischler School of Education’s approach to distance education. Online students in the secondary biology education program are required to attend a three week lab seminar on NSU’s Main Campus in Fort Lauderdale.

 
FIELD EXPERIENCES AND INTERNSHIP

The field experiences provide teacher candidates with an opportunity to perform the duties of an elementary classroom teacher within the classroom setting. The purpose of these experiences is to allow teacher candidates to demonstrate their understanding of the Florida Educator Accomplished Practices and subject area competencies. A minimum of 10 field experience hours required per education course and are to be completed throughout the elementary education program.

The clinical practice (internship) is the culminating experience for those teacher candidates earning a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. The teacher candidate is assigned full time to a school for 12 weeks. Opportunities are provided for the teacher candidate to engage in lesson planning, instruction, and parent/teacher conferences. During this period, the teacher candidate will observe, teach, and evaluate students in conjunction with the regular classroom teacher.

 
COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS
  • Satisfactory completion of the required coursework
  • Satisfactory completion of the clinical practice (internship)
  • Successful completion of field experiences
  • Minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0
  • Passing scores for the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE): General Knowledge Test, Professional Education Test, and Subject Area Examination
  • Completed application for degree
 
STATE REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATION

The Bachelor of Science in Secondary Biology Education is a Florida state-approved certification program, and meets all of the requirements for the Florida Department of Education’s secondary biology education (grades 6 -12) initial certification.

Florida participates in the Interstate Agreement on Qualification of Educational Personnel with 38 other states for teacher certification and/or licensure. Graduates who wish to teach outside the state of Florida must contact their state’s Department of Education for information on achieving certification through reciprocity.
