Bachelor of Science in Prekindergarten & Primary Education (Florida State-Approved for Certification with ESOL)

ABOUT THE MAJOR

The bachelor of science in prekindergarten/primary education (age 3 - grade 3) with ESOL endorsement at the Fischler School of Education is a state-approved initial certification program in Florida that focuses on training teacher candidates to enter the classroom, while emphasizing the teaching of early childhood students by combining theoretical components with practical application. This primary education degree provides future educators with a foundation in classroom management, curriculum development, and methods of teaching, as well as skills for working with children age three through grade three. Course content is research based and infuses best practices in education and strategies for teaching English as a second language (TESOL). An emphasis is placed on the appropriate uses of technology. The TESOL certificate degree program aligns directly with the Florida Department of Education’s certification requirements for prekindergarten/primary education and endorsement requirements for ESOL.

WHO SHOULD APPLY
  • Individuals with high school degrees or General Equivalency Diplomas (GED) who wish to enter the teaching profession as an elementary education teacher
  • Individuals enrolled at another college or university who wish to transfer to NSU’s Fischler School of Education and Human Services’ bachelor of science in prekindergarten/primary education program
  • Practicing early childhood paraprofessionals who wish to obtain a bachelor’s degree in prekindergarten/primary education and increase their level of expertise in their field

  • Completed admission application packet, including $50 nonrefundable application fee made payable to Nova Southeastern University
  • Official high school transcripts with courses, grades, and graduation date (if available) or GED equivalent
  • Official Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or ACT scores are also required for admission into the Professional and Liberal Studies program on NSU’s Main Campus
FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS
  • Completed admission application packet, including $50 non-refundable application fee made payable to Nova Southeastern University
  • Official transcripts from all previously attended colleges and universities
  • Official high school transcripts with courses, grades, and graduation date (if available) or GED equivalent are required for applicants with fewer than 24 college credits
FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
  • Completed admission application packet, including $50 nonrefundable application fee made payable to Nova Southeastern University
  • Course-by-course transcript evaluation with GPA calculation and official English translation, if necessary, from Josef Silny & Associates, World Education Services, or other National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) member
  • For non-native English speakers, official test scores showing a minimum score of 213 on the computer-based or 550 on the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam, 480 on the verbal section of the SAT, a grade of “C” or better in a composition course at regionally accredited college or university in the U.S., or 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam
  • Student (F-1) visa or exchange visitor (J-1) visa
  • Original bank statement or official letter from a financial institution indicating ability to meet all costs of education without financial aid from Nova Southeastern University

CONVENIENT DELIVERY OPTIONS

Coursework in the bachelor of science in prekindergarten/primary education TESOL degree program is available to both traditional students and working professionals at NSU’s main campuses in South Florida, completely online, and at two of NSU’s student educational centers located in Florida. The kindergarten/primary education major is presently offered at the following locations:

  • Fort Lauderdale Main Campus
  • Miami – Kendall Student Educational Center
  • Tampa Student Educational Center

The site-based program allows students to take classes in the evenings in a location near their homes. The online program allows students, both domestic and international, to receive and submit coursework and interact with participants and professors via the Internet. The distance education program allows busy professionals the option to complete their degrees without having to leave their jobs or travel long distances.

 
FIELD EXPERIENCES AND INTERNSHIP

The field experiences provide teacher candidates with an opportunity to perform the duties of a classroom teacher within the classroom setting. The purpose of these experiences is to allow teacher candidates to demonstrate their understanding of the Florida Educator Accomplished Practices and subject area competencies. A minimum of 10 field hours total are required per education course and are to be completed throughout the program.

The clinical practice (internship) is the culminating experience for those teacher candidates earning a bachelor’s degree in an education field. The teacher candidate is assigned full time to a school for 12 weeks. Opportunities are provided for the teacher candidate to engage in lesson planning, instruction, and parent/teacher conferences. During this period, the teacher candidate will observe, teach, and evaluate students in conjunction with the regular classroom teacher.

 
COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS
  • Satisfactory completion of the required coursework
  • Satisfactory completion of the clinical practice (internship)
  • Successful completion of field experiences
  • Minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5
  • Passing scores for the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE): General Knowledge Test, Professional Education Test, and Subject Area Examination
  • Completed application for degree
 
STATE REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATION

The bachelor of science in prekindergarten/primary education with ESOL endorsement, Florida state-approved for initial certification, meets all requirements of the Florida Department of Education’s prekindergarten/primary education (age 3 - grade 3) initial certification and ESOL endorsement.

Florida participates in the national Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification Interstate Agreement facilitating mobility of Educational Personnel with over 50 other states and jurisdictions for teacher certification and/or licensure. Graduates who wish to teach outside the state of Florida must contact their state’s Department of Education for information on achieving certification through reciprocity.
