Doctor of Education with a Minor in Gerontology

ABOUT THE MINOR

The minor in gerontology provides an overview of the psychology, biology, sociology, and cultural diversity of gerontologic processes and populations. This concentration emphasizes a humanistic perspective, in-depth information about normal aging processes and their impact on individuals, families, and society, as well as the critical ability to challenge current cultural attitudes toward aging. Course content is research based and infuses best practices in education.

ABOUT THE DOCTORAL PROGRAM

The concentration component of the Doctor of Education program allows students to maximize their knowledge and skills of their current and/or an emerging field. Students seeking a Ph.D. in applied behavior analysis should consider our Ed.D. program with a minor in applied behavior analysis. Concentrations require a minimum of 18 credits in the area of study, but may require up to 24 credits. Concentration courses must be taken online.

Through the elective component, students individualize their doctoral degrees. Depending on the number of credits required in the main concentration, students must complete the minimum 66-credit requirement using electives. These electives may also be applied toward a second concentration (18–24 credits) or a minor (15 credits). Elective courses must be taken online.

CONVENIENT DELIVERY OPTIONS

Coursework for the doctor of education is offered in a variety of formats – completely online or in a combination of on-site and online (blended) classes. The distance education program allows busy professionals the option to complete their degrees without leaving their jobs or traveling great distances. Students may elect to take their core seminars at the sites or completely online. Concentration and elective courses will be delivered completely online.

Online courses allow international students and those who don’t live near our South Florida campuses to interact in a virtual classroom.
Blended programs combine on-site and online instruction. On-site courses are offered periodically over weekends and supplemented with online study.

In addition to coursework, all doctoral students are required to participate in the Conference on Global Leadership, Learning, and Research in their first year of studies.

APPLIED DISSERTATION (12 CREDITS)

The applied dissertation is a detailed, accurate, and cohesive account of a scholarly investigation. It answers a research question directed toward the improvement of practice in education and human services. Research is distinguished by a theory-to-practice model encompassing a diversity of disciplines. Each student is assigned a faculty committee to facilitate and supervise the process.

CERTIFICATE OF ADVANCED GRADUATE STUDIES

The Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies program is designed for individuals with master’s degrees or higher who are interested in earning a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies from among 20 fields of study. (No degree is conferred upon completion; however, credits can be applied toward a Doctor of Education degree.)

To earn a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Gerontology, students will be required to take 18 credits from the gerontology minor.
