Field Experience Supervision

Supervision

In order to improve the skills of the teacher candidate, an assigned university supervisor will observe and provide feedback during the field experiences of specified courses.

The field experiences in Benchmark I are designed as introductory experiences to cover the foundation courses and are restricted to observations, interviews, and data collection. Actual supervision begins in Benchmark II. The following courses are key content courses in which university supervisors observe teacher candidate's classroom skills. These courses are as follows:

Benchmark II:
EDUC 3540 Principles and Practices of Instruction and Assessment II
EDEC 3520 Families in Early Childhood Programs: Challenges and Opportunities
Benchmark III:
SECE 4370 Methods of Teaching Middle and Secondary English
SECE 3530 Methods of Teaching Middle and Secondary Social Science
SECE 3550 Methods of Teaching Secondary Science
SECE 4350 Methods of Teaching Math in Secondary School
Benchmark IV:
ESED 4550 Methods and Teaching Materials for Teaching SLD Learners
EDMS 4550 Methods for Teaching Science in Middle School

Each field experience supervisor will make one visit per teacher candidate for a minimum of one hour. During this visit, the supervisor will:

  1. Review the teacher candidate's lesson plan.
  2. Observe the teacher candidate presenting a lesson.
  3. Observe the teacher candidate managing behavior.
  4. Observe the teacher candidate performing other instructional duties.

The university supervisor will confer with the cooperating teacher and complete an evaluative feedback form identifying observed areas of strengths and weaknesses. Teacher candidates review the evaluations in the assigned university course and discuss methods and procedures for improvement with the instructor. Severe deficiencies are referred to the administrative coordinator of internship for counseling, remediation, and follow-up visits.

Implementation of Field Experience Supervision

The field experiences university supervisor will visit the first class meeting to assist in explaining the procedures for supervision and his/her expectations. Information packets will be distributed during the first class meeting. Teacher candidates should complete and submit the form to the instructor by the third class meeting, who will submit them to the Academic Program Manager. This means that teacher candidates are required to quickly find placements and arrange a schedule with the cooperating teacher.
