Master of Science in Education with a Specialization in Spanish Language Education (Degree Only)

ABOUT THE SPECIALIZATION

The master of science (M.S.) degree program with a specialization in Spanish language education requires at the Fischler School of Education 36 credits for completion. Candidates who have knowledge of Spanish can further develop their proficiency in the four skills while they study innovative teaching methodologies, culture, literature, and linguistics. Students in the master’s in Spanish education program can learn skills appropriate for teaching at all K-12 levels, from elementary school Spanish to the Advanced Placement courses. Strategies appropriate for teaching Spanish as a second language as well as Spanish for heritage speakers will be explored. Course content for the online master’s degree in Spanish education is research based and infuses best practices for language educators.

  • Practicing Spanish language teachers who wish to obtain a graduate degree and increase their expertise in the field

  • Individuals with any bachelor’s degree, but with a knowledge of Spanish to help them improve their Spanish while they learn how to teach the language

  • Complete the admission application packet and submit a $50.00 non-refundable fee (U.S. dollars) made payable to Nova Southeastern University (NSU)
  • Official transcripts from all previously attended academic institutions. An official transcript indicating conferral of a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution is required
  • Evidence of a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average (CGPA) or test scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) with a combined score of 1000 for the verbal and quantitative scales only. The GRE must have been taken within the past 5 years from the date of application
  • Applicants who do not meet the minimum 2.5 GPA or GRE score requirement, may enroll in a maximum of six (6) credit hours and must earn a grade of B or higher in each course during the first term of enrollment for conditional admission. Students who do not earn a grade of B or higher in each course will be subject to dismissal from the program

CONVENIENT DELIVERY OPTIONS

Coursework for the master’s in teaching Spanish program is conducted entirely online. This approach allows international students and those who don’t live near our South Florida campuses to receive and submit coursework and interact with participants and professors via the Internet. This distance education option allows busy professionals the option to complete their degree without having to leave their jobs or travel long distances.

 
APPLIED PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

The Applied Professional Experience is one of many practical applications included in the Spanish language education specialization. It is the final step in the completion of the program. Conducted in an appropriate educational setting, candidates will put into practice what they have learned in their program of studies. It involves making three observations and teaching three classes at a school.

Faculty members for the master of science in education are recognized scholars and educators from Nova Southeastern University and other major universities and institutions throughout the country. In addition, many are also highly respected professional practitioners. They are carefully selected on the basis of their subject expertise, teaching abilities, and professional involvement. Most important, they are united in their desire to not only educate, but to inspire students to use what they learn to inspire others.

 
COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS
  • Complete CUR 526, EDU 5000 and EDU 601 within first term of program at NSU
  • Satisfactory completion of all required coursework
  • Complete program capstone: Applied Professional Experience (24 credit hours of coursework to include CUR 526 and LANG 580 with a 3.0 cumulative GPA must be completed for eligibility)
  • Maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher
  • Completed application for degree
