Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Master of Science in Speech-Language and Communication Disorders Program at the Fischler School of Education focuses on training speech-language pathologists to provide a full range of services to individuals with communication disorders in a variety of professional settings. The master's in speech-language pathology provides a scientifically-based academic and clinical curricula to foster critical thinking and application of best practices. Course content in our online graduate program is research-based and prepares students to meet the requirements for the Certificate of Clinical Competence, and the Certificate of Clinical Competence awarded by the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA). The master's in speech-language pathology (SLP) is also accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of ASHA.

  • Completed admission application packet, including $50 nonrefundable application fee made payable to Nova Southeastern University
  • Official transcripts indicating conferral of a bachelor’s degree by a regionally accredited institution (minimum overall 3.0 grade point average required)
  • Official transcripts from all previously attended postsecondary institutions
  • Written essays
  • Three letters of recommendation by three different individuals who can attest to the applicant’s ability to succeed in a master’s program
  • Oral interview
FOR NON-NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS

Applicants whose native language is not English may be required to demonstrate English proficiency through results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

International students must present verification of student visa or residency status.

Due to persistent difficulties with the availability of clinical placements in Canada, students who live in Canada will not be eligible for admission to the Master of Science in Speech-Language and Communication Disorders Program. Furthermore, students accepted to the Master of Science in Speech-Language and Communication Disorders Program may not relocate to Canada before the completion of the degree.

CONVENIENT DELIVERY OPTIONS

Coursework in the speech-language pathology major is available on the main campus and at our instructional sites in the state of Florida for those who live within a one-hour’s driving distance. Online course delivery is offered to all other students throughout the United States. Coursework is offered in the evenings or on weekends through face-to face, videoconferencing, online, and hybrid (face-to-face and online) deliveries, which affords students the opportunity to complete the academic portion of their degrees while maintaining employment.

 
PREREQUISITE COURSES

Prerequisite courses will be accepted as part of the applicant’s bachelor’s degree coursework if the applicant earned a grade of B or higher in each required prerequisite course. Prerequisite courses will only be accepted if taken within the past 10 years of the date of application to the program. If the applicant did not complete the required prerequisites as part of their undergraduate program, courses may be taken as post baccalaureate work.

 
EXTERNSHIPS

Clinical labs and externships are practical applications included in the speech-language pathology major. These applied experiences are the final steps in the completion of the program and include placements in three clinical settings, affording students the opportunity to work with diverse clients across the lifespan. Candidates must complete a minimum of 400 supervised clinical contact hours before graduation.

 
ON-CAMPUS CLINIC
The program offers a state of the art communication disorders clinic for student practicum experience and as a resource for the community. Specialty clinics in AAC and voice disorders as well as services for all communication disorders are available for children and adults.
 
COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS
  • Satisfactorily complete all required courses, including Capstone (SLP 6200) 
  • Successfully complete the required clinical experiences totaling a minimum of 400 supervised clinical contact hours 
  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher 
  • Successfully complete the required portfolio 
  • Complete the Praxis Exam
  • Complete application for the degree and satisfy all Fischler School of Education and Human Services and Nova Southeastern University financial obligations.
 
FACULTY

Faculty members for the master of science in speech-language pathology are scholars and educators from Nova Southeastern University and other major universities and institutions throughout the country. In addition many are also highly respected professional practitioners, who are carefully selected on the basis of their subject expertise, teaching abilities, and professional involvement. Most importantly, they are united in their desire to not only educate, but to inspire students to use what they learn to motivate others.
