Doctor of Education

The Ed.D. in Education offers students a menu-driven approach to customizing their doctoral degree with nine different concentration options, flexible curriculum choices, and multiple instructional delivery options. The 5 main components of the degree are the Core Seminars, the Concentration, the Research Elective, the Electives/Minors, and the Applied Dissertation. Students may elect to take their core seminars online or at one of our many instructional sites throughout the US, while concentration and elective courses will all be delivered completely online.

Doctoral Studies Orientation (0 CREDITS)
The Doctoral Studies Orientation is an online course that provides students with an overview of six distinct areas related to doctoral studies: program overview, enrollment services, applied research, technology, distance library services, and debt management. Completion of this non credit course is a mandatory requirement for all students entering a doctoral program at the Fischler School. Students should complete DSO 8000 prior to beginning their first doctoral course.

Core Seminars (18 CREDITS)
The core seminars prepare students for in-depth application of knowledge and skills, inquiry and research, problem-solving, collaboration and communication, and professional development. As these competencies are prominent in any chosen discipline, they are the foundation of the program and required for all students.

Research Elective (3 CREDITS)
The research elective allows students to gain specific knowledge in the applied research method selected for their dissertation. Students are required to choose one research elective course.

Concentrations (18 – 24 CREDITS)
Concentrations offer students the ability to explore and apply contemporary knowledge and practical skills within nine distinct fields. These areas of study are comprised of a minimum of 18 credits, but may require up to 24 credits. Students must select one concentration area and take the prescribed courses in the concentration.

Electives/Minors (9 – 24 CREDITS)
The electives and minors provide students the opportunity to individualize their doctoral degree. Students can select individual courses of interest or opt to earn a minor or second concentration in another field. Students must meet the 66-credit minimum requirement through the options in this area.

Applied Dissertation (12 CREDITS)
The Applied Dissertation is a detailed, accurate, and cohesive account of a scholarly investigation designed to answer one or more research questions.  It is required of all FSEHS doctoral students and its purpose is to improve practice in education and human services. The dissertation process consists of a total of 12 credits encompassing three major benchmarks (i.e., concept paper, proposal, and final report).

Conference on Global Leadership, Learning, and Research
The Summer Conference is a mandatory program component for all first year doctoral students.  The experience includes conference sessions, applied dissertation workshops, the face to face portion of the summer term trends and issues, and research courses, as well as the opportunity to meet one on one with dissertation chairs. Equally important, students have the opportunity to network and interact with their doctoral peers and meet with their field associates.
