The educational specialist with a specialization in educational media focuses on training educators in the area of library media center leadership. The field-based project is one of many practical applications included in the educational media specialization. This culminating experience is the final step in the completion of the program. The purpose of the field-based project is to engage the student in a problem-solving experience designed to improve or enhance an educational situation. The process is systematic and involves submission of a formal practicum proposal; active participation, implementation, and/or research; and an evaluation of the activities.

Coursework for the educational media specialization is available completely online. The online delivery option allows students to receive and submit coursework and interact with participants and professors via the Internet. The distance delivery option allows busy professionals to complete their degrees without having to leave their jobs or travel long distances.
