The master of science in instructional design and diversity education with concentrations in gifted education, reading education, or teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) provides a solid foundation in instructional design, as well as in assessment and evaluation practices that apply to the areas of cross-cultural awareness and classroom culture. This major will enable practitioners to develop curricula to meet 21st century demands, design learning modules using a problem-based learning approach, and effectively teach a student population that is increasingly diverse. Through their selected concentrations, graduates may obtain a Florida or Nevada state-approved endorsement in English to speakers of other languages (ESOL), gifted education, or reading. Course content is research based and infuses best practices in education.

The field experience is the culminating experience in this program. It allows students to integrate classroom concepts in an environment that stimulates thinking, processing and analysis. The experience will be organized around a selected research question that will require the integration of theory from the instructional design and diversity education components. All students, with the exception of those who choose the reading specialization, will be required to complete the field experience.

Coursework for the instructional design and diversity education major is offered in a variety of formats—completely online or in a combination of online and on-site (blended format) at select student educational centers. The online program allows students to receive and submit coursework and interact with participants and professors via the Internet. The site-based program allows students to take classes in the evenings or on weekends in locations near their home. These distance delivery options allow busy professionals to complete their degree without having to leave their jobs or travel long distances.

Faculty members for the master of science are recognized scholars and educators from Nova Southeastern University and other major universities and institutions throughout the country. In addition, many are also highly respected professional practitioners. They are carefully selected on the basis of their subject expertise, teaching abilities, and professional involvement. Most important, they are united in their desire to not only educate, but to inspire students to use what they learn to inspire others.

Concentration courses in the instructional design and diversity education major meet the requirements of the Florida Department of Education’s endorsements in English to speakers of other language (ESOL), gifted education, or reading. It is the responsibility of the student to contact their state’s department of education to verify if additional requirements need to be satisfied.
Florida participates in the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification’s Interstate Agreement facilitating mobility of educational personnel with more than 50 other states and jurisdictions for teacher certification and/or licensure. Graduates who wish to teach outside the state of Florida must contact their state’s Department of Education for information on achieving certification/licensure through reciprocity.
