Master of Science in Education with a Specialization in Exceptional Student Education In-Country Jamaica

About the Specialization

The master of science in education with a specialization in exceptional student education focuses on training educators in the area of teaching students with disabilities. This specialization provides educators with skills for assessing and teaching life skills and academic content to children and youth with disabilities across the spectrum. Course content is research based and infuses best practices in education. The program was developed in coordination with the Jamaica Teachers’ Association.

Earned bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the United States or must have a bachelor’s degree evaluated as being equivalent to the US degree from a regionally accredited degree program (2.5 minimum cumulative grade point average required) or the completion of one of the alternative admission requirements

Convenient Delivery Options

Coursework in the master of science in education with a specialization in teaching and learning is available at instructional sites in Kingston, Mandeville, Montego Bay and Browns Town in St. Ann. This site-based program allows students to take classes on Friday evenings and on Saturdays in locations near their homes. The distance delivery option allows busy professionals to complete their degrees without having to leave their jobs or travel long distances.

Action Research in Practice

The action research in practice is one of many practical applications included in the exceptional student education specialization. In action research in practice part I, students will develop a project proposal that identifies a need or problem and the creation of a viable solution based on educational research. The proposal must be approved by the student’s advisor, reader, and the Institutional Review Board. In action research in practice part II, students will actively engage in problem-solving in an educational setting and implement their approved proposal for a minimum of 12 weeks, monitor progress toward the objectives, using formative and summative assessment strategies, analyze the resulting data, and write a final report.

Completion Requirements

Satisfactory completion of all required coursework
Successful completion of the Applied Professional Experience
Cumulative maintained grade point average of 3.0 or higher
Completed application for degree

NSU hires practitioners with backgrounds in teaching, educational leadership, and administration.
